Information sent on behalf of Derbyshire Constabulary

Derbyshire County Council’s Trading Standards Service has received enquiries from the public suggesting rogue companies are knocking door-to-door offering to drop the kerb outside the property.

It is alleged that these companies say they are ‘approved’, which is untrue, and that they can carry out the work almost immediately.

However, to have a dropped kerb, householders must obtain a quote and a reference number from a Local Authority-approved contractor, which must then be submitted to Derbyshire County Council. The approval process may take up to three months.

If this procedure is not followed, and the work is carried out by unapproved contractors, the householder could face extra charges imposed by the Local Authority.

For other types of building work and home maintenance, please consider employing the services of a member of the Derbyshire Trusted Trader Scheme:

Derbyshire Trading Standards Service advises people not to deal with businesses and tradespersons who coldcall, and to report such instances to Citizens Advice Consumer Services on 0800 144 8848.

Suspicious activity should be reported to the Police – please ring 101
